In order to determine the accuracy of sonography in the diagnosis of choledocholithiasis, authors analysed sonographic findings of 60 patients with stone (s) in the extrahepatic ducts who underwent surgery. Sonographic criteria of stone (s) was
echogenic foci in the dilated common duct with or without shadowing. Stone (s) was detected in 42 patients, the sensitivity being 70%. Of the 18 patients in whom stone was not detected, 16 patients had one or more of the following findings :
gallbladder
stone, cholecystitis, intrahepatic stones. cholangitis. And/or dilated extrahepatic ducts.
